Diseases to be aware of this summer!

Come summer and with it comes a whole host of diseases. Many bacteria and viruses thrive in the heat creating a range of diseases to be aware of.

  1. Food Poisoning

The most common ailments that people face when the summer temperature climbs are of the stomach and gut. Several potent bacteria multiply in the heat causing an increase in infections of the digestive tract. Food poisoning, a result of ingesting contaminated food and water results in many cases of hospitalizations. Salmonella is a type of bacteria found in undercooked meats, eggs, and unhygienically handled fruits and vegetables. Salmonella contamination can cause typhoid, fever, headache and diarrhea. Similarly E.coli is another bacteria that increase in number during summer. Drinking contaminated water or eating contaminated food such as ground undercooked meat, and raw vegetables can cause infection from these bacteria. The symptoms include nausea, vomiting and fever. Staphyloccus, Complobacter jejuni, Shigella and Colstridium are other bacteria that cause gastroenteritis.

Some ways to avoid food poisoning are to eat out less during summer.

  • Drink only boiled water or mineral water.
  • Wash your fruits and vegetables with care.
  • Cook your vegetables and meats well.
  • Not eat food that has been out in the heat for long or is old.
  • Wash one’s hands with care.

General treatment for food poisoning includes getting plenty of rest and drinking a lot or water and electrolytes to prevent dehydration.

Chicken Pox is a painful contagious disease that becomes virulent in summer months. It is caused by the zoster virus, which spreads through droplets in the air. Symptoms include itchy inflamed pimples over the body, fever and fatigue. Today you can give your children the chicken pox vaccine as a preventive measure. Proper diagnosis and treatment is required to overcome this disease. Prevent it by using mosquito repellents, and using nets to prevent them from entering one’s home. Locating and destroying breeding grounds of mosquitos and frequent fumigation are other way to reduce the occurrence of malaria.

  1. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs)

Most cases of urinary tract infection occur because of inadequate intake of water and other fluids. Ways that one can protect oneself from UTI are by drinking a lot of fluids like coconut water and melon juices that will flush out the bacteria that stick to the urinary tract.
Not hold in urine for long lengths of time. Wear comfortable (not tight) underwear and keep oneself clean.
